Everyone likes a nice hot shower when they wake up in the morning or maybe at the end of a long day. What many homeowners may not realize is water heating is often the second-highest energy expense in their home. The average household spends $400 to $600 per year heating water. 

A more efficient water heater can help you save money and may reduce your home's carbon footprint. Electric heat pump water heaters are the most efficient water heater on the market today. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a household of four can save about $330 per year on electric bills by switching from a conventional electric water heater to a heat pump water heater, saving thousands over a water heater's life of 10 to 15 years.   

Heat pump water heaters work like a refrigerator in reverse. Refrigerators take heat from the inside of the refrigerator and move it to the surrounding room. Heat pump water heaters do the opposite and use electricity to move heat from the room into the water tank. 

Heat pump water heaters can cost more to purchase and install than conventional electric resistance and natural gas water heaters. However, heat pump water heaters are about three times more efficient, so you may save money over time. 

Heat pump water heaters also can help dehumidify damp spaces like basements and garages, where they are typically installed. Be sure the unit is installed by a qualified contractor where the air temperature averages 40 degrees Fahrenheit or above year-round. 

Don't forget to get your heat pump water heater checked out once a year and clean and replace air filters periodically.
