New Community Solar Program Proposed

The program would be served by MGE's new solar array in Fitchburg.

A share of MGE's Strix Solar array in Fitchburg would serve the new community solar program, if approved by state regulators. The array came online in January 2025.

A new community solar option from MGE could be available soon, if the program is approved by regulators. The proposal is largely based on Shared Solar, MGE's original and fully subscribed community solar program.

The new program would offer participants the option to pay a minimal up-front fee to subscribe to receive energy from a local solar array for six years as the company continues to work toward reduced carbon emissions of at least 80% by 2030 (based on 2005 levels).

The proposal builds on the success of MGE's Shared Solar program, providing customers with affordable, locally generated solar energy. MGE residential customers who choose to participate could receive carbon-free energy for up to 50% of their annual consumption and would lock in their energy rate for the six-year term of the agreement. A low-income alternative also is proposed.

Strix Solar

One-third of Strix Solar, a 6-megawatt (MW) solar project in Fitchburg, would serve MGE's new community solar program, if approved. The remaining four MW will continue to serve all MGE electric customers. Strix Solar came online in January and is serving all MGE customers.
